WIC Formula Update

The Iowa WIC Program’s current formula contract is with Abbott Laboratories/Nutrition Division. Per Federal Regulations, WIC’s standard, contract brand formulas must contain 67 calories/100 mL (about 20 calories per ounce at standard dilution) in order to be provided without medical documentation. Currently, we are able to provide Abbott’s Similac Advance and Similac Soy Isomil formulas without the WIC Special Formula Medical Documentation Form or prescription providing all of the required information, because these formulas contain 20 calories per ounce. Similac Sensitive, Similac Total Comfort, and Similac Sensitive For Spit-Up currently require a prescription as they contain 19 calories per ounce, however, they will soon be reformulated to 20 calories per ounce. Therefore, participants in need of these formulas will no longer need a prescription from their healthcare provider to receive them. The change for Similac Sensitive and Similac Total Comfort will occur on October 1, 2020 and the change for Similac Sensitive For Spit-Up will occur on December 1, 2020. Please note that the Iowa WIC Program does not currently approve the Pro Similac formulas.
Please contact the State WIC Office at 1-800-532-1579 if you have any questions about these changes.
